My Significant Event - "Step Out to Stop Diabetes"
In October of 2008, I almost lost my mother to diabetes. In October of 2013, while driving, I heard on the radio about an event taking place in Cincinnati called “Step Out to Stop Diabetes.” I have always heard about 5K run/walks for cancer, but never about diabetes. I was so excited to finally be able to stand up for something that has affected me personally. I decided to sign up for the walk to stop diabetes.
During the Step Out event, I learned how many Americans are affected by this awful disease. I realized, at one point or another, we are all affected by diabetes. We all have a family member, close friend, or classmate/colleague that has diabetes. It is a disease that is in all of our back doors, and we need to stand up to it. After completing the walk, I decided I want to become more involved in advocating to stop diabetes. I plan on walking every year, and next year I will commit to fundraising for the event. When asked to donate a dollar, while shopping in Kroger or Walgreens, I will do so. I know that will be one more dollar that can further the research to cure this horrific disease.
While at the event, I captured photos which were used to create my collage for this activity. I chose a collage because I wanted to showcase the Step Out event. I also create a wordle that describes how I am personally affected by diabetes, the different types of diabetes, and different ways to prevent and advocate for diabetes.
